Why After-Hours

Why After-Hours Cleaning Works Best for Schools

The operational reality of a school is that the building is occupied and in active use from around 7:30am until 4pm — teachers arriving early, students throughout the day, after-school activities and staff meetings extending into the late afternoon. Cleaning during this window means navigating occupied classrooms, moving around students and staff, and accepting that wet floors, furniture moved mid-session and chemical odours during teaching hours create real friction with the school's core function.

After-hours cleaning eliminates every one of these friction points. The building is empty, every room is accessible without coordination, furniture can be moved without interrupting anyone, floors can dry fully before the next session and cleaning products can be applied without concern about student exposure to odours or residual chemicals. The cleaning team works more efficiently in an empty building — a task that might take 45 minutes around an active class takes 20 minutes in a vacated room — which means more gets done in the same contracted hours.

No disruption to teaching

Classrooms are cleaned after teachers and students have left for the day. There are no interruptions to lessons, no wet floors during class time, no cleaning equipment blocking corridors during changeover periods and no chemical odours affecting a lesson in an adjacent room. The school day runs exactly as planned regardless of the cleaning schedule.

Full building access

Every room is accessible without timetable coordination. Cleaners can move sequentially through the building — classrooms, bathrooms, corridors, staffroom, library — without waiting for a room to become free or working around active sessions. This uninterrupted access is the single biggest efficiency gain of after-hours cleaning over daytime cleaning in a school context.

Better cleaning outcomes

Floors mopped after hours dry fully before students arrive the next morning, eliminating the wet floor risk during drop-off. Floor treatments — scrubbing, buffing, seal applications — can be applied with the required drying time without scheduling constraints. Desks wiped with disinfectant can be left to dry fully and air out before the next session rather than being sat at minutes after cleaning.

Scope of Work

What We Clean During After-Hours Shifts

The after-hours shift covers the same scope as a standard daily school cleaning contract — classrooms, bathrooms, corridors and common areas — with the additional benefit that the work proceeds without any access constraints. The specific tasks within each area are agreed at contract commencement and documented in the cleaning specification, which forms part of the service agreement. For specialist services such as carpet extraction, floor strip and seal or a full deep clean, these are scheduled as separate holiday engagements — see the deep cleaning page for detail.

Security & Access

Security & Key Management Protocols

Granting after-hours building access to a cleaning contractor is a significant trust and security decision for a school principal and business manager. The risks — key duplication, alarm code misuse, unsupervised access to the building outside school hours — are real, and a school is entitled to detailed answers about how these risks are managed before signing a cleaning contract. Golden Star operates a documented access management system that addresses each of these risks specifically.

The protocols below reflect Golden Star's standard after-hours access management approach. For schools with specific security requirements — access control card systems, biometric entry, custom alarm procedures or contractor management systems — the protocols are adapted to the school's existing security framework at contract commencement. Full documentation of access procedures is provided to the school principal and business manager as part of the service agreement. For a complete overview of compliance documentation, see the compliance and safety page.

Key management register

Every key issued to Golden Star is registered by key number, the team member it is assigned to and the date of issue and return. Keys are not carried between shifts — they are stored in a locked key cabinet at the operations office and signed out by the assigned team member at the start of each shift. The key register is available for inspection by the school at any time and is reconciled monthly.

Alarm code documentation & incident protocol

Alarm codes are stored separately from key records in an access-controlled digital system — not written on any physical document associated with the key. If an alarm activation occurs during a cleaning shift, the team member is required to contact the school's nominated emergency contact immediately and document the incident in the shift log. Any unexplained activations are reported to the principal by 7am the following morning.

Sign-in/sign-out register & CCTV awareness

The team member signs in on arrival and signs out on departure at the school's contractor register each visit, with the entry time, departure time and areas cleaned recorded. All team members are briefed on the CCTV coverage within the building — not to avoid it, but to ensure documented access behaviour that is consistent, transparent and verifiable for the school's records.

Schedule Options

After-Hours Cleaning Schedule Options

Melbourne schools vary considerably in their after-school activity schedule, security setup and staffing arrangements — what works as an access window at one school may not work at another. Golden Star offers three primary shift windows, each suited to different school configurations. The shift window for a given school is agreed at contract commencement based on the school's calendar, security protocols and the last daily activity that needs to conclude before cleaning can begin.

PM

Evening shift — 3pm to 10pm

The most common shift window for Melbourne school daily cleaning contracts. Cleaning begins as soon as the last classrooms are vacated — typically between 3:15pm and 4pm after after-school activities conclude — and completes well before 10pm. This window gives the cleaning team 6 to 7 hours of building access on a standard school day, sufficient to complete a full school clean including bathrooms, corridors and staffroom areas. The alarm is re-armed when the team exits. Most primary schools and smaller secondary campuses run on this schedule.

Most common for daily contracts
AM

Early morning shift — 4am to 7am

Preferred by secondary schools with late evening activities, hired-out multipurpose facilities or security configurations that make late evening access more complex. The early morning window begins at 4am — well before any staff arrive — and cleans are completed by 7am. Three hours gives a team sufficient time for a full primary school clean; larger secondary campuses typically require a larger team size to complete the full scope in this compressed window. Early morning shifts may carry a modest shift loading under the Cleaning Services Award 2020.

Weekend slots — Saturday & Sunday

Weekend access is available for periodic deep cleaning, post-event cleaning, floor treatment visits and any scope that requires extended time in the building without the pressure of the following morning's school day. Weekend slots are commonly used for the carpet extraction and floor strip-and-seal work that accompanies a term-end deep clean, where extended drying time is part of the process. Weekend work is priced at the applicable Award rate and confirmed in the written quote.

Cost of After-Hours vs During-Hours Cleaning

Evening cleaning (3pm–10pm) is priced at the standard daily cleaning contract rate — no after-hours premium applies within this window, as it is the normal operating window for school cleaning under the Cleaning Services Award 2020. Early morning shifts (4am–7am) and weekend work may attract a shift loading consistent with the Award rates for those hours. The practical consequence is that for most Melbourne schools operating on an evening shift, after-hours cleaning costs the same as daytime cleaning while delivering better outcomes because the building is empty and the team has full access.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Two primary windows are available: evening shifts from 3pm to 10pm — starting once classrooms are vacated after the school day — and early morning shifts from 4am to 7am, completing before staff arrive. The evening shift is most common for daily cleaning contracts as it provides the longest uninterrupted access window. Early morning shifts suit secondary schools with late evening activities or complex security configurations. Weekend slots are available for periodic deep cleaning and holiday work. The shift window is confirmed with the business manager at contract commencement based on the school's specific calendar and security setup.

Golden Star maintains a documented key management register for every school in the program. Keys are numbered, registered to a named team member and stored in a secured key cabinet at the operations office — not carried between shifts. Alarm codes are stored separately in an encrypted digital system and are never recorded on any physical document associated with the key. Any alarm activation during a shift is reported to the school's nominated emergency contact immediately and to the principal by 7am the following morning. Full documentation of the access management system is provided to the school as part of the service agreement.

Yes. Under the Child Wellbeing and Safety Act 2005 (Vic), all persons regularly working in a school environment — including contractors accessing the site outside school hours — must hold a current WWC Check (Employee). The check applies to the category of work, not the presence of students. Every Golden Star team member holds a current Victorian WWC Check. Copies are available to the school principal on request, and expiry dates are tracked in Golden Star's compliance management system with renewal prompts well before each check's expiry date.
